Statement of Principles Regarding Grading April 20, 2005 |
Prompted by questions raised by the recent flap regarding grading in the DSON and the administration's vagueness regarding grading policies, UUP Binghamton adopted the following statement of principles:
1. The prerogative and obligation of instructors of record are to evaluate and assign grades based on student performance in their courses.
2. Only under extreme and unusual circumstances would administration change grades assigned by instructors of record.
3. The procedures by which grades are changed by administration must be clearly delineated and must be agreed upon jointly by faculty and administration.

Interview with Gerry Sonnenfeld, Vice-President for Research March 15, 2005 |
| In response to concerns expressed by UUP members, UUP met with Gerald Sonnenfeld, BU's Vice-President for Research, to discuss support of scholarship of faculty whose research areas are not a source of large amounts of external funding. Sonnenfeld reiterated BU's support for all areas of scholarship. He also explained his ideas of shaking faculty out of their usual modes of seeking research support. | Provost Forms Committee to Investigate DSON Resignations March 8, 2005 |
| As reported in the February issue of the The Connection, two faculty members in the Decker School of Nursing (DSON) resigned last semester over grading policies. Ross Geoghegan, chair of the Faculty Senate, announced in the Faculty Senate meting today that the Provost has formed a committee to look into the affair. Provost Swain will chair the committee; one committee member will be selected by the DSON administration, one by the faculty of the DSON, and a third by the the other three members of the committee. The committee will issue a public report. No date has been set for the release of the report. The Press & Sun Bulletin has also reported on the story. |

| UUP responds to Strategic Plan February 11, 2005 |
| In September, 2004, Binghamton University released a draft strategic plan to map where the university should go in the next 5-10 years. UUP responded to that plan. In response to UUP's and other's comments, BU released a revised draft strategic plan late last year. UUP has now responded to the revised plan. |

| Notes of Labor/Management Meetings February 7, 2005 |
| Article 8.4.a of our contract provides that a "College President, or designee, shall meet with local UUP representatives once each month to discuss matters of interest raised by either party." UUP Binghamton has used these Labor/Management meetings to raise issues of concern to our members. The notes from the February meeting are now available. |
